Are you interested in a career associated with business or management? Or economics and finance? How about marketing and sales, or law and policy? You can get there through Bumpers College’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness.

Just ask Randall Pope, he did it. Pope earned his master’s degree in agricultural economics in 1978 and is now director and senior advisor at Westchester Group Investment Management, a Nuveen investment affiliate.

“Westchester is a leading global agricultural asset manager, providing a complete range of agricultural investment and management services,” said Pope. “We help maximize farmland returns and ensure that land is kept in the best condition to maintain asset values for our investors.”

In addition to helping clients transition into retirement, his firm and his job impact everyone by helping “feed the world” and it is a solid career field because it “grows with the population.” Oh, and he points out a first-year graduate in his field, with a master’s degree, can expect to earn $65-70,000 a year. Pope says graduates with a bachelor’s degree can expect $10-20,000 less to start.

His advice to anyone wanting to make a difference in society not just domestically but around the world: “I started businesses in seven countries using a U.S. model. Do what you love then you will never work a day in your life.”

Westchester operates offices in the U.S., Australia, Europe and South America. “It’s a global business,” said Pope. With over $8-billion of assets and commitments under management, Westchester’s portfolio includes more than 400 high-quality, farmland properties in seven countries.

So, why agriculture? “Because of the growth opportunities and benefits to mankind,” said Pope.
